# Understanding Sat Rarity

That’s over two quadrillion. Even our government hasn’t reached those numbers (yet).

In 2022 Casey Rodarmor started working on Ordinal Theory which defined a numbering system for sats. The numbers assigned to each sat he called ‘ordinals.’ We often use the term ordinal when referring to a sat with data inscribed on it, but an ordinal is simply the number of the sat. ## Assigning Rarity To Sats

With a way to define each individual sat, it also became possible to assign rarity based on its position in the blockchain. In the article above Casey defined the rarity of sats. Today, using his definition, when a new block is added only 1 sat (the first one) of the 625,000,000 new sats has rarity. This first sat in the block is called **'uncommon.'**&#x20;

From 2009 until 2012 miners were rewarded with 50 BTC for every block added to the chain. When BTC halved there were 10,500,000 BTC in existence in 210,000 blocks, which contain 210,000 'uncommons.' Approximately every four years the reward will be cut in half again after the next 210,000 blocks have been added.&#x20;

To calculate the rarity of an uncommon requires dividing the number of blocks by the number of sats. At the time this was written there are just over 800,000 uncommons and 19,420,000 Bitcoin, each of which has 100,000,000 sats in it. 800,000 / (19,420,000 \* 100,000,000) = 0.00000000041179657167&#x20;

I am not sure I would personally consider 0.00000004% uncommon. You are 8 times more likely to win the Megamillions Lottery Jackpot than an individual sat has of being considered uncommon.

### What Is More Rare Than Uncommon?

What does Casey consider a ‘Rare’ sat then? Every 2016 blocks a new difficulty adjustment takes place, and the first sat in that block is rare. It is hard to know how many of these rare sats have been found, but it is very few. There are less than 400 in existence, and I have only seen three reported.&#x20;

In addition there are definitions for epic, legendary and mythic sats in Casey's Ordinal Theory, but we are not likely to ever see one. There are fewer than five epic sats, zero legendary sats currently and only one mythic sat. Our chances of ever finding any of these are not good.

### What Are Satributes?

If the super hard to find sats above were all we had to hunt for, people would be really disappointed. Fortunately, people have become creative and started putting value on new sat traits, or satributes as they are called. Here are some examples.&#x20;

* Vintage Sats - Sats from the first 1000 blocks
* Block 9 - Sats from the first known sats in circulations
* Block 78 - First known Bitcoin mined by someone other than Satoshi (Hal Finney)
* Pizza Sats - Sats from the 10,000 BTC used to buy 2 Pizzas on May 22, 2010
* Palindrome Sats - Sat number is the same forwards and backwards (ex. 1234321)

There are also unique names associated with each sat that hunters have started to collect as well. Name palindromes and words within the sat names have garnered some interest from collectors. Every combination of letters 10 characters or less will be out there, but good names are really difficult to find.&#x20;

I expect there will soon be more satributes people begin to search for and better tools will become available as sat hunting becomes more popular.
